Mediumship: Connecting to our loved ones on the other side

61196_148508758524798_100000970241137_228152_2116644_nI took another class at Vision Quest recently, this one on Mediumship. I know a lot of people who say that they have communication with their loved ones on the other side of the veil and I believe that I have experienced the same. But I wanted to take this class to see if I was right.

Similar to my questions when taking the class on Spirit Guides and Angels, I wasn’t sure if the voices I think I’m hearing or the messages I think I’m getting are just my imagination or the real thing. There are times when I very strongly feel a specific loved one’s presence, especially if I’m using my pendulum. I can feel him in the room, hear his voice and see his smile.

John_Beattie_Eugene_Rochas_seanceBut is it real?

The class was taught by Apollo, a metaphysician who teaches lots and lots of classes at VQ. He addressed this question, right off the bat–it’s apparently a common one.

Apollo’s advice was (I’m paraphrasing) if you fear that you’re making it up, go ahead and make it up. Pretend to  have a conversation. Just do it. As you practice, and allow yourself to be open to contact, the stream of information will become stronger and eventually you will feel the difference. You’ll know when you’ve connected.

He led the class in some automatic writing exercises, which were very effective. I felt the same way as I feel when I’m connecting with my favorite “ghost” at home, so it felt validating.

And then, my mind was blown.Crystall-ball

After the exercises, Apollo asked each of us for the name of the person we connected with, and he opened himself up to messages. When it was my turn, he tapped right in. Even he seemed surprised by how strong the connection was. I could see his aura growing large and bright and, as he spoke, his energy body began to actually look like my loved one.

It.

Was.

Amazeballs.

Unfortunately, he was interrupted by someone in the class who decided that this would be a good time to ask a mediumshipquestion, so the connection was temporarily broken. He did manage to tap back in, but the visual sensation was lost.

I was pretty bummed out by the interruption, but, bare minimum, I got what I came for: validation. It’s hard, when you grow up in a skeptical world, to not think you’re crazy when this kind of stuff happens. I’m even mildly uncomfortable writing about it here on my blog, because I don’t want certain family/friends to read it and think I’m nuts.

But I know what I know. I’ve spent my whole life psychically connected and pretending around certain people that I’m not, for fear of being made fun of. No more. The classes I’m taking at Vision Quest are really helping me to come out of the broom closet.

Magical candles that WORK!

7 magi

From the 7 Magi facebook page.

I recently started a new job at a metaphysical bookstore (talk about getting paid for something you’d do for free!!!). I’ve been attending classes, getting psychic readings, and trying products. It’s awesome!

In my reading with Sonya Lee (I talked about her in my most recent blog) she suggested that I try one of Sondra’s candles. Sondra is one of the other psychics (both read Tarot cards, along with other psychic gifts), and she makes and sells magical candles. Sonya said that she’s used them, and they are powerful!

So, why not? I get an employee discount (yay!) so I bought one to correspond with one of the issues we discussed in the reading.

Since then, the situation has not only improved, it’s done so in ways that I never imagined possible. My mind is blown! (I’d give details, but they involve other people, whose privacy I wish to protect.)

I don’t know if Sondra ships them, but if you’re in the Phoenix area, you can find them at Vision Quest Metaphysical Bookstore at 3114 East Indian School Road. Check out Sondra’s facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/7magi

Meet your spirit guides and angels …

angelI took a class on spirit guides and angels recently at Vision Quest bookstore, in Phoenix, taught by one of their in-house psychics, Sonya Lee. I’ve been into metaphysics and psychic/intuitive arts my whole life, but I’ve never been able to connect with my own guides or angels. So I thought I’d check out this class.

When asked to introduce ourselves, I told the class that I have no problem believing that spirit guides or angels exist. But for some reason, aloneI find it hard to believe that I have them or that, if I do, I can connect with them. This is, no doubt, why I have a hard time connecting–I know that. Even so, I feel very alone.

But what to do about it?

Sonya, a friendly, down-to-earth instructor, was able to help me with that. After explaining the various kinds of angels and guides, she led the class through a meditation to meet one of our own guides. I had an interesting Sonyaexperience with the meditation, but what really helped me was to just watch Sonya as she connected with her own guides.

I noticed that, from time to time, she’d stop talking and laugh as her own guides would say something funny–which she would then share with us. I recognized what she was doing. I, too, have similar experiences. A voice, not my own (and not the mental illness type of disembodied voice), will answer a question that I’m stewing on or chime in with a punchline or two.

For me, it usually happens in the shower. I get my best ideas in the shower. I’ll be thinking about something when BLAMMO … an idea pops into my head and floods me so quickly that I pray that I’ll remember it Ang-angels-8307005-480-460all until I can rinse off and get to a pen and paper.

I’ve noticed that I can access this voice when I’m in a certain frame of mind–relaxed, curious, and relatively Zen. I can’t hear my own guidance if I’m tense, angry or impatient. And this is exactly what Sonya suggested in her class. It was a wonderful validation that I was already doing what I was trying to learn to do.

Regarding her psychic abilities, I had a reading with Sonya, too, and she was right on the money. She nailed several issues and offered excellent advice, which is working beautifully. She is available at Vision Quest in person at 3114 East Indian School Road, in Phoenix, or via phone at 480-949-1888.

Cleanse-prep: Procrastination City!

I don’t want to do this cleanse. It’s so much easier to keep eating like I have been, and not have to shop for all of the special ingredients, and spend all that money, and eat separate meals–not to mention the actual preparation and consumption of said “meals”, which are all going to be green or liquid and not even close to chocolate-flavored.

That said, here’s my first Journal entry (see this blog for an explanation of the format):

Triumphs: I made my shopping list for five days of the “morning cocktail”. I’m going to buy organic whenever possible.

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Lemons and/or limes, for juicing, enough for 1/3 cup per day
  • Fresh garlic, 15-25 cloves
  • Fresh ginger, 2.5″
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Oranges for juicing, enough for 2 cups per day

This is a Triumph because I’ve been putting this off for long enough, and I’ve finally stopped procrastinating.

Makeovers: That Triumph counts as a Makeover, too, because it’s something that I’ve done to feel better about myself. Aside from that, I finally colored my hair this morning, and got some stretching exercises in. It felt good, but crunchy, to move a little.

Challenges: This could get expensive. I have to buy a lot of specialty foods, on top of my regular grocery shopping, since I’m the only one in my house to be doing the cleanse. Money is a little tight, so this is going cleanse pullquoteto take some fancy footwork.

Intentions: I intend that I actually look at the Sprouts ad when it comes in the mail this week (I usually just throw it away with the mountain of other ads it comes buried in), and shop their sales. They usually have really good produce prices. Between them, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods, I should be able to pull this off. Then, I intend that I shop for everything I need later this week.

Current Conditions: Feeling a little better, now that I’ve done this much. Well begun is halfway done, right?

Daily Thanksgiving: I’m thankful that my doctor was able to see that I needed her to push me into this. I probably wouldn’t have done it on my own–at least, not until after the holidays, and I probably would be several pounds heavier by then. I’m grateful that I finally live near the kinds of stores I need to pull this off (for many, many years I did not).

Wanna join me? I’ll be responding to your comments here and on my facebook page.

Cleanse-prep journal format

In one week from today, I’ll be starting a doctor-ordered cleanse. It’s mostly fruits and vegetables, with some quinoa for protein. I’ll use this blog to introduce the format I’ll be using for my cleanse journal.

After a crazy weekend, I’m finally able to sit down today and begin planning for next week. I’ll post the cleanse instructions as soon as I can give the proper credit to its creator. I don’t know if it’s something my doctor came up with, or if she got it from elsewhere. So, when I know that, I’ll post the instructions. Hopefully that will be later today.

Shape Shifters Daily Diary front coverMeantime, I’m using my Shape Shifters Daily Diary format, which includes these components, posted in this order:

Triumphs
Makeovers
Challenges
Intentions
Daily Thanksgiving

The instructions, below, are given in a slightly different order, because it’s easier to explain this way:

Challenges are the circumstances that keep you from your preferred state. Challenges are the only component to be worded as possibly negative because we immediately flip them over and reword them as …

Intentions, which are Challenges reframed to make a positive statement. Once you recognize a Challenge, you now know what you intend to overcome. Find a positive way to reword your Challenge and start the sentence with “I intend that I AM …”, stating it in the present tense. The creative Force into which we speak takes our words—and how we feel about them—very literally.

Triumphs are signs that forward movement is happening. They don’t have to be “Mission Accomplished.” They can be the smallest indication carlton-dance-gifthat something has improved. Shining light upon them helps them to grow. And it’s always fun to do a happy dance.

Makeovers are the things you do to look or feel better about yourself. They can be as simple as wearing your favorite shirt to work—the one you save for special occasions—or showering with your “expensive” soap. They can also be energy clearing actions like cleaning your closets, changing your sheets or smudging your house with sage. Changing the Feng Shui of your home is an extremely powerful Makeover. They don’t have to cost anything, but they should make you feel like you’ve cleared some stagnant energy.

To use a gardening analogy:

  • Stating your Challenges is the same as tilling the rocky soil.
  • Setting your Intentions is planting high-quality seeds.
  • Recognizing your Triumphs is spotting and caring for the tiny sprouts as they poke through the earth.
  • Makeovers are the fertilizer that makes your soil rich.

Daily Thanksgivings are daily ways of checking in and appreciating what’s already good in your life. Think of it as a mini “Rampage of Appreciation,” for you Abe fans.cleanse pullquote

I think that’s enough information for one blog. I’ll post later with my journal entry for the day.

My experience with Chakradance

My friend Emma Porter is a Chakradance™ facilitator. For a long while I’ve wanted to participate in one of her workshops, and was finally able to this morning. I’m happy to report that it’s just as wonderful as she promised, and more.

Click this image for a great article on the chakra system.

Click here to learn about the chakra system.

“What is Chakradance?” you ask. Good question. I didn’t know either. I knew what chakras are, I knew what dancing is, but I couldn’t imagine how one would combine them. Here’s a description from the Chakradance website:

In a darkened room, lit only by candle-light, we move to music created to resonate with the vibrations of each of our 7 major chakras.  We dance with our eyes mainly closed, and our attention turned inwards, for unlike most other dance practices, Chakradance is about making a connection with our inner world – the world of our imagination, feelings, intuition and senses.

dancingbabyAt first, I felt a little weird. I’m open to new experiences, but I’m slightly uncomfortable dancing in front of other people. As my friend Leanne said,  “I don’t want to be the ‘old lady’ on the dance floor.” I know exactly what she means. Neither of us are going to be out there twerking any time soon.

But this isn’t dancing, per se. It’s a moving meditation. In fact, you don’t even have to dance (you can if you want to, but you don’t have to). You can sit or even lie down, which is good because I am currently dealing with an ankle injury that made it hard for me to meditate2this2stand for very long. So I sat down halfway through and “chair danced”, and the experience was just as deep.

I attended the “7 Keys to Freedom” workshop, which includes nine songs: seven designed to resonate with each individual chakra, and two more as intro and outro music. For each song, Emma gives specific guided instructions, which I found to be extremely powerful and easy to follow.

A couple of people in the workshop with me described it, afterwards, as taking a journey into themselves. Emma said that she’s heard that before. I can see why. It really is like entering an altered state and taking a trip into your inner being. I don’t know how else to describe it. You’d have to be there.

I’ve listened to all sorts of recorded chakra-balancing and guided meditations over the years, but there is something very different about this. I was truly surprised by how effective the experience was.

The best part was Emma, herself. She gets so much joy out of facilitating these workshops that she makes you feel welcome, comfortable and ready to participate. If you’re in the Phoenix, AZ area, and want to give it a try, check out Emma’s website for her schedule of events. And if you’re not, or would like to just try it at home, you can purchase DVDs and CDs at their site. Save 10% with discount code: EMMA

Shape Shifting: Rebooting after a long, hard summer

I live in Arizona, where the summers are indescribably hot. Novelties like cups and t-shirts with this sentiment are common:

This is how that sentiment makes me feel:

Suffice to say, I am ecstatic to see September finally arrive. It’s been a long, hot summer. To make it worse, I’ve been experiencing the internal hell of perimenopausal hot flashes. Half the time I feel like I’m filled with red-hot lava. The other half of the time, I’m picking myself up from where I collapsed, due to the lava.

Anyway, enough with the silliness. Yesterday, Labor Day, I gave the house a good fall cleaning and saw my face in the mirror, as if for the first time in months. I was shocked by how old and tired I looked. It reminded me of a summer, years ago, when I experienced something similar. I wrote about it in my book, Shape Shifting–reclaiming your perfect body. Here is an excerpt:

I happen to have an example of shape shifting from real life to show what I’m talking about.

A recent summer was a rough one, one that made me look and feel really old. On top of our everyday lives, with their everyday stressors, my husband Jeff and I experienced several explosive events, the kinds that individually would have been enough to make anybody cry out to the heavens, “God, why do you hate me?” In addition, we were physically exhausted after, due to those events, living for three months in the Florida summer with no air conditioning and moving from one house to another twice! I also had a job that brought me to tears on a fairly regular basis because it was so disgusting and loathsome. You wouldn’t believe the details if I told you, but take my word for it: this was an exceedingly painful few months—one of the hardest periods of my entire life.

After we moved for the final time, and things seemed to have settled down, I finished unpacking and finally breathed a sigh of relief in our new, air-conditioned place. With a fresh perspective and newly reopened eyes, I caught my reflection in the mirror and was horrified by what I saw. There were deep lines in my face that looked as though they had been etched in with a chisel and a heavy hand. I was pale and wan, and had dark circles under my eyes. My hair was dull and frizzy and I was all hunched over, like a beaten dog. In addition, my body ached all over. I was actually frightened by how much I had aged in such a brief time.

It suddenly occurred to me what had happened. I had allowed all of the “external” events and circumstances to take their toll on my physical body. Honestly, in retrospect, I don’t think I could have prevented it because I was so deeply immersed in the hell that had become my life—I felt very distant from my soul that summer. However, I realized that, in that brief period of time, I had packed years worth of living and learning into a concentrated package. I had previously, and impatiently, asked for accelerated spiritual growth and I got it! I may have matured ten years mentally, emotionally and spiritually, but I didn’t have to let it show physically! So I decided to see if I could erase it from my face, just for fun. No harm in trying, right?

I didn’t really expect it to work. I was mostly just goofing around. I was feeling good, with all of the drama behind me, and was finally comfortable, safe and able to relax. It was more of a lighthearted effort with no real process. I simply decided to relax my muscles and let go of all the stress. I reminded myself to smile and to rejoice in the fact that all was well again. I closed my eyes and breathed in deeply, allowing the inner me to come forth.

Much to my amazement, it worked! As I opened my eyes and watched my face in the mirror, the lines went away and my color returned to normal. The hag in the mirror was magically transformed into the youthful and energetic person that I remembered being, a long time ago (three months ago). Lest you think it was just my imagination, Jeff even noticed the difference, when he came home later. He agreed that it looked like ten years had been removed. He had good reason for saying that—it had been removed!

“Big deal,” you say? It was a big deal. Remember how, when you were little, your mom told you not to make faces because your face might stick that way? She didn’t realize how right she was. If I hadn’t released the stress, and had continued to carry it around with me, my face would have indeed frozen that way and carried that age with it for the rest of my life—or at least until such time as I chose to release it.

This may seem like an elementary example, but it’s a perfect one. The point is, this is what I’m talking about—our thoughts, worries, actions and lives in general do have an affect on our bodies! Maybe it’s time we started to pay attention to what we’re creating in every moment!

I was surprised to discover that the same thing had happened, again. The details of this past summer were different from the one I wrote about, but I still saw myself in the mirror looking old and wretched.

So what I decided to do, as I cleaned that mirror, was to imagine that my Windex/rag combo was wiping away all of the damage done to my face. I allowed myself to relax and let go of the stress of the summer. I reminded myself that cooler weather is on its way, and I watched some of the age and worry drain fade away.

It really does work. Give it a try sometimes.

The Goddess of Hummingbirds

I have two hummingbird feeders hanging from my second floor balcony. I love sitting out there and watching all of the birds in the nearby tree, but I especially love watching the hummingbirds.

I love the view from my patio.

I love the view from my patio.

I didn’t know, before I hung the first feeder (I started with the one on the far left), that hummingbirds are extremely territorial and downright vicious when it comes to protecting their food source.

One bird in particular laid claim to the feeder and wouldn’t let anyone else near it. He would sit on a nearby branch, chirping, and at first I thought he was singing a song of hummingbird happiness, “Look at all the food! Isn’t life grand? Hey, Other Hummingbirds, look what I found! Come join me!”

But once I Googled “hummingbird behavior” I discovered that what he’s really saying is, “This food is mine, bitches! You come near, you die!”

Say hello to my little friend.

Say hello to my little friend.

Whoa. Not so friendly.

So I bought another feeder and hung it at the other end of the patio, hoping that some of the other hummingbirds in the area would get a chance to eat.

I was wrong. That little bugger sits up in the tree, practically screaming, like Daffy Duck in Ali Baba’s cave, “Mine! Mine! Mine!” Any bird that dares approach gets dive bombed and chased away.

It’s funny to watch how the other birds seem to work together: “I’ll distract him, while you go get a quick sip. Then it’s your turn to have my back.” Meantime, Mr. Grabby spends his entire existence chasing and screaming, to protect an overabundance of food. He never gets a chance to relax and enjoy.

I wonder if that’s how the Universe works. It gives me all I need, and enjoys doing so, but I’m too busy stressing out and protecting what’s “Mine!” to notice. What if I’m sitting on my branch, freaking out whenever it looks like someone else is dipping into what I feel is a limited supply? After all, once in a while those feeders get empty and then they disappear for what feels like an eternity.

What if, while my feeders are gone–and it feels like the world has come to an end because my supply has disappeared–it’s just because the Big U is cleaning them and cooking up a new batch of sugar water for me?

My book was pirated–I’m somebody now!

When I was doing standup comedy for a living, I worked with Tim Allen a lot, before he got famous. I knew Tim had made it big when I saw his name as a clue in a TV Guide crossword puzzle. Well, I may not be that famous, but I just discovered that one of my ebooks is being offered as a torrent. These days, that counts for something. My work is now virtual currency!

Honestly, my initial reaction was, “Hey! That’s not cool!” and I looked into having it removed because of copyright infringement, but then I thought again. My  reason for caring is because the book is out of print, not because of the pirating issue. I’m rewriting it, and I didn’t want the first version of this book to be available anymore.

Meet Lola Garnett, a bored housewife, mom and office drone who wakes up with unexpected psychic abilities, and no instruction manual, and Twink, the reluctant, sarcastic fairy assigned to assist and educate her. In this first book in a series, middle-aged Lola has resigned herself to an unsatisfying life of servitude as a wife, mother and office drone. The American Dream she's living feels more like a coma, and she secretly longs for a more meaningful life. In a perfect demonstration of "be careful what you wish for…" she gets her wish when she wakes up from a nap one day with extrasensory abilities and powers. The adventure really kicks into gear once she learns that her condition is the result of a botched spell coming from across the street, where her wanna-be-witch neighbor, Melinda Underwood, is foolishly playing with powers she doesn't understand. Lola’s untrained intuition tells her that Melinda intends to use her equal, yet opposite, powers for evil against innocent people. With the help of a tiny, sarcastic, ethereal sidekick, can Lola overcome her helpless resignation to overthrow Melinda's evil plot and, while she's at it, find her own self worth?

Cover art by Justin Spyres

I originally wrote Be Careful What You Witch For! in the first person, as Lola Garnett, an Ohio woman who wakes up from a nap with magical abilities and no instruction manual. She is eventually assigned a pissed off fairy as a sidekick/instructor. Hijinks, of course, ensue.

The problem is that Lola isn’t a writer, she’s just an average person, so the writing style is intentionally obtuse. When it was time to begin writing the sequel, I wanted to tell it in the third person POV so I won’t have to limit myself to just what Lola could know about. But that means I had to rewrite Book One, first. That’s what I’ve been working on, and it’s slow going. I’d really rather just move on to Book Two.

So I’m thinking … maybe this is the Big U’s way of telling me to just get on with Book Two and don’t bother rewriting the first book. Maybe the fact that it’s already out there, beyond my control now, means that I’m supposed to let go of it. What do you think? If you’ve read the book, visit my Facebook page to let me know if you think it’s fine, as is, or if it needs to be rewritten as a third person narrative.

Thanks!
