Once upon a time, I worked as a standup comic. This means that I spent more than my fair share of time eating in diners after “closing time.” I wrote this poem back then and recently found it in an old notebook. I’m posting it here for posterity.

It’s three in the morning, the bars are all closed.
I’m with all my friends here at Denny’s.

It’s been a long evening, we’ve hung in there well.
In fact, no one has passed out but Jenny.

And here comes our waitress, hair perfectly coiffed,
a run in her hose, that’s the truth.

She pours us some coffee, slaps down a few menus,
while Tommy barfs in the next booth.

“May I take your order?” our waitress inquires,
while casually scratching her butt.

The couple beside us is kissing with lust.
Do I have to watch all this smut?

My friends place their orders. It’s my turn, you see.
A sparkle appears in my eyes.

I know what I want, I’ve been waiting all night.
I want bacon and eggs and home fries.

Home fries, o’ home fries, a pagan delight.
O’ where did you get your sweet name?

I’m sure that some housewife made you up in a rush,
then went on to seek fortune and fame.

Great hunks o’ taters, fried to a crisp,
Tasty cubes all golden and brown.

Not often in life is one able to find
such a food that turn frowns upside down.

My friends are done eating. They sit back and they belch.
They talk about ordering pie.

Not me, I’m not finished. I’m just getting started.
“Oh, waitress! Bring me more home fries!”

***

The irony is that I don’t particularly like home fries. I prefer hash browns. But the words “home fries” are funnier. Or so I seemed to think, back then.

Testing, testing, 1 2 3 …

I just got a new smartphone and I’m testing the WordPress app. Because of the microscopic keyboard, this won’t be long.

Here’s you a dog.

Breaking Rule #1 of blogging

Rule #1 of blogging: write about what your audience is interested in.

I’m so freakin’ bored that I’m writing a blog about it. I know that no one cares about my current state of mind, and yet I’m telling you anyway.

Bored Beyond Belief. From the blog Harris’ House from “L.A. Story” http://www.iamnotastalker.com/2013/05/14/harris-house-from-l-a-story/

Ain’t I a stinker?

Kindle fans: “Be Careful What You Witch For!” is back!

be careful front cover I recently wrote a blog about one on my books being pirated for use as a torrent. My issue wasn’t that my work was being stolen, it was that I had taken that book off the market because I was rewriting it. Well, I’ve republished it. It’s available again (both in paperback and ebook), because I’ve changed my mind.

Fans of Lola and Twink will be happy to know that I’m moving forward with the sequel, and writing it in the third person, with a planned publication date of Halloween, October 31, 2014. That’s five years to the day since the first book in the series–hopefully Book 3 won’t take that long to get out there (life got a little nuts between then and now).

Book 1–as is–will be the only one written in Lola’s voice. It was Lola Garnett’s diary, written while trying to figure out, with the help of a pissed off faery sidekick, how she woke up with powerful psychic abilities and how to use them to stop the crazy bitch across the street from destroying her life.

In the sequel, which is written in the third person, Lola has become more comfortable with her abilities and life has settled into a modicum of normalcy again. She starts taking classes at the local New Age book shops and learns to journey “across the veil” into the other realms.

Hijinks, of course, ensue when she becomes entangled with an extremely attractive mystery man, on the other side, and Twink, who is finally allowed to come home after paying her penance by helping Lola, can’t seem to find her way there. Lola is once again challenged to solve life’s puzzles and challenges, while working with powers she doesn’t understand. (More details to come.)

If you haven’t yet read Be Careful What You Witch For!, it’s only $2.99 at the Kindle Store. If you’re already a fan, you might want to subscribe to my blog so you’ll receive updates and notifications about Book 2.

See ya then!

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WITCH FOR!
twinklowres Meet Lola Garnett, a bored housewife, mom and office drone who develops strange psychic abilities overnight with no instruction manual, and Twink, the reluctant, sarcastic fairy assigned to assist and educate her. In this first book in the series, middle-aged Lola Garnett has resigned herself to an unsatisfying life of servitude as a wife, mother and office drone. The American dream she’s living feels more like a coma, and she secretly longs for a more meaningful life. In a perfect demonstration of “be careful what you wish for” she gets her wish when she wakes up from a nap one day with extrasensory abilities and powers. What she doesn’t Lola Garnettknow is that her condition is the result of a botched spell coming from across the street, where her wanna-be-witch neighbor, Melinda Underwood, is foolishly playing with powers she doesn’t understand. Lola’s untrained intuition tells her that Melinda intends to use her equal, yet opposite, powers for evil against innocent people. With the help of a tiny, sarcastic, ethereal sidekick, Lola overcomes her helpless resignation to overthrow Melinda’s evil plot and in the meantime, finds her own self worth.

What a fun book! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and found that I did not want to put it down. I loved the charactors and the story in general. Many times throughout the book I felt like I could be Lola! I will be anxious to see the next book in the series! Thanks for such an enjoyable read. I passed it on to a friend who is another ‘aspiring witch’! 🙂

Lisa Bonnice is a master at creating interesting, quirky characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish and could not put it down. I found it to be witty, amusing, intelligent, and edgy. I especially loved it because unlike many books that deal with metaphysical subjects, it has a sense of playful irreverence. The protaganist is a “mainstream” person who is a complete novice when it comes to psychic phenomenon, which makes the story refreshing, fun, and lighthearted. I can’t wait until the next book in the series is completed. I’ll be the first in line to buy it.

This book was both fun and thought-provoking….a page-turner that leaves you wanting more (and looking forward to the next installment!) It works on many levels, first as the story of Lola, an ordinary woman who is coming to grips with her own strengths and weaknesses, beliefs and self-doubts, while coping with the day-to-day issues of marriage, family and work. It is also a unique fantasy/fable that takes you along on a journey with Lola as she learns to cope, with the help of her own higher self and her reluctant fairy side-kick, Tink, with her burgeoning new paranormal gifts and the unexpected, confusing, and often hilarious side-effects that they have on her life.

5.0 out of 5 stars

I love this book. Lisa Bonnice has managed to address the fears of anyone who is exploring their own abilities for the first time and give us the ability to laugh at ourselves and then step back and look a little deeper into our own souls. Written with humor and depth. This is a must read for anyone who is looking for that great “bathtub book” or a good reason to curl up with a warm blanket and a hot cup of coffee. You will find yourself laughing not only at Lola but also at yourself as Lola bumbles through as many of us really have done in exploring our own paths. While the book has some moments of comedic genuis but when you finish the book and find yourself missing the characters, you will also find that there were some wonderful life lessons along the way.

Love It!
This is one of those stories that entertains while making you step back and think. Lola is every woman who has ever found herself in a place of not knowing who she is or why she is here.Lola’s journey into self discovery and spirituality, left me with the desire to really step back and take a look at myself while being excited to find out what they next part of the journey will be.The story is told with both humor, compassion and wisdom.I certainly hope there will be more adventures with Lola and Twink.

An incredible demonstration of trust

Amanda Palmer posted this on her facebook page recently, and I want to share it here because it’s too beautiful to get buried on the downward scroll of a facebook page:

“from the MINISTRY OF LIFE, DEATH and CROWDSURFING, i discovered this gem of a clip and it’s perfect for today. if you want to know how easy it is to try to sing in key while being turned upside-down in the hands of strangers, here is your answer. not easy.

“it’s me with The Grand Theft Orchestra (michael, jherek and chad) doing “bottom feeder” from the kickstarter record, “Theatre is Evil”. i’ve been writing about crowd surfing and trust in The Book, and chad raines, seen here playing guitar, just showed up at the house for a few days. tonight we cook kale. in a few days jherek bischoff (seen here singing INTO his bass and conducting the strings section) is going to show up with about 12 people since they’re recording up the road in hudson. we are readying all the guest futons. and a few days ago, in the rain, i was at michael mcquilken(the drummer)’s wedding.

“what’s most painful-beautiful about this clip, though, is that this was filmed in london, at Koko, a few weeks after the record came out.

“that was the night that, two hours before getting on stage, i got the phone call that becca had died. i barely remember playing the show….but i have these incredibly strong memories of feeling more alive than i ever had before. all the songs about death (like this one) took on a whole new meaning. i still won’t watch the “astronaut” clip. it was one of her favorites. all i can remember is that i couldn’t get through it. maybe next year.

“life, death, life, death, life in a circle.”

When she allows herself to fall into the waiting hands of her crowd, considering the emotional pain she’s in, she is demonstrating such incredible trust that it took my breath away. I can’t watch this video without being deeply moved. I hope you will find it so, as well.

Finally, sensible serving sizes!

Nice! I’ve long wished that so-called “serving sizes” would be addressed.

Have you ever looked at “serving sizes”? Some of them are sheer madness. I used to buy brownies from a vending machine at work before I learned to pay attention to that part of the label. I thought, “I can splurge this much,” but one day I read the label and saw that my brownie was actually two servings. I was double splurging and had no idea. And we’re not talking about a big brownie. It looked like a single serving, to me.

Serving sizes are designed to keep the consumer feeling like they can eat more than they actually should, exactly as I described above. Who can eat a single serving, according to the package, of Girl Scout Cookies?

Are you who you thought you’d be?

SHAPE SHIFTING on BLOGTALKRADIO:
ARE YOU WHO YOU THOUGHT YOU’D BE?

After last week’s discussion about asking for help, tune in to find out where that conversation led. We’ll be talking about pushing ourselves forward, in creating our own reality. Did we end up where we thought we’d be? If not, now what? And, how did Amanda Palmer save Lisa’s life? 😉

SHAPE SHIFTING = The conscious, deliberate release of old thought patterns, to create healthy changes in your life. (The bonus is that this usually results in weight balancing–loss or gain–depending on your body’s needs.)

When is it time to ask for help?

SHAPE SHIFTING on BLOGTALKRADIO:
WHEN IS IT TIME TO ASK FOR HELP?

I don’t know about you, but I’ll push myself really hard before I will ask for help. Sometimes I have to actually collapse before I’ll admit that I can’t do something.

There’s nothing wrong with pushing your limits. It is, after all, what life is all about. It’s what we’re here for–it’s how we create our own reality.

But once in a while, things fly out of alignment because we push too hard.

Or are we pushing too hard because things flew out of alignment?

Chicken/Egg?

In any case, this is what we’ll be talking about this week. Tune in.

I’m testing HootSuite. Fun times!

I’m testing HootSuite. Fun times! This is forcing me to finally get off my butt and build a Google+ page, and to link all of my various social networking sites to each other. I don’t have a whole lot else to say in this blog other than, “Testing testing, 1 2 3!”

Shape Shifting is back!

btr player buttonAs promised in recent blogs, after an extremely long hiatus, I finally brought back my BlogTalkRadio show today, with a whole new version of the show. If you were a listener, back in the old days, you’ll recall that I used to feature some pretty cool guests, all of whom were booked to share their expertise in this whole “create your own reality” thing that we’re trying to figure out.

The shows and guests were great, and I really enjoyed doing them, but they gradually drifted away from the topic of Shape Shifting–which I define as the conscious, deliberate release of old thought patterns, to create healthy changes in your body. This usually results in weight balancing–loss or gain–depending on your body’s needs.

But, at the time, when I was doing the old show, no one else knew enough about Shape Shifting to talk about it with me, so I stopped doing the show and moved on to other things.

Well, in December 2012, I started up a Shape Shifting group on Facebook—mostly because I needed it, just like I wrote Shape Shifting to begin with, mostly because I needed it. I had started smoking again, I had gained some weight when my parents both ended up with cancer and my dad even died. I sort of stopped taking care of myself because I just didn’t have time or, quite frankly, the interest.

But once life settled back down again, I realized that if I didn’t start taking better care of my body, I was going to end up sick, too. I’ve already written, in recent blogs, about the big changes I’ve made, so I won’t go into that again.

This time, on the show, I’ll be joined by other Shape Shifters—people who have been in the group with me and who have used the same format to create changes in their own lives. We’ll be demonstrating how to run an in-person Shape Shifters group and how to use the Diary format. We’ll be talking about our own journeys, complete with triumphs, makeovers, challenges and intentions-for-positive-change … and our hope is, in that sharing, that you’ll become excited about your own Shape Shifting journey, and join us regularly.

Even better, you can join the new Facebook group that has been created specifically to go with this show. You can interact with me and each other, and really start digging into whatever it is that’s keeping you from doing this for yourself. It’s my hope that, this time next year, you’ll be able to say Shape Shifting has changed your life.

Now let me say, upfront, that I’m not trying to sell you anything, but I strongly recommend that you read my book, Shape Shifting. It’s going to help you so much in understanding what we’re talking about. Notice that I didn’t say “buy” my book, I said read it. While I’d love it if you’d buy a copy—because, after all, I have to make a living, too—if you can’t afford it, I offer free downloads of the .pdf version. Just so you know, Shape Shifting never has to cost you a dime, except for the money you spend on yourself when buying healthier foods, or fitness equipment, or whatever it is that you need to do. If you want to read the book, visit my website at http://www.shapeshiftingonline.com and you’ll find it there.

Meantime, be sure to listen to today’s show (it’s been archived and is also available on iTunes) and tune in every week to learn how to Shift your Thoughts to Shift your Shape!
