The Magic of Music

David Morrissey as Ripley Holden, in the BBC miniseries, Blackpool.

Followers of my blog know why Blackpool, England is on my Bucket List, so I won’t repeat myself. We’ll be there in a couple of days, and today I had a powerful reminder of how I made this happen — the power of music.

See, once I decided that I wanted to make this trip, I became obsessed with the movie soundtrack. I played it almost non-stop, to the point where Jeff begged me to knock it off, so I wore headphones or only played it when he wasn’t home.

In fact, I even added several of the songs to my walking playlist, to listen to while I power-walked to get in shape for this trip. I would go out and pound the pavement in time to the music and, while I did that, I would fantasize about what it would be like when I was walking in England.

So today, while we were driving north from Glastonbury (we’re spending a couple days in Yorkshire before heading to Blackpool this weekend, while I do some research for an upcoming novel), I was searching for some music on my laptop to play over the camper’s bluetooth radio but couldn’t find any of the music I downloaded for the trip … except for the Blackpool soundtrack.

Interestingly, Jeff was okay with listening to it, so we blasted it as we drove through the rain up the M6, seeing signs for Blackpool along the way. As I listened to these well-loved songs, I remembered what it felt like to be wishing, hoping, praying … manifesting with all of my heart … and it sunk in: it worked!

I felt like I was in a house of mirrors, peering through the looking glass at younger me, the one who was so desperately trying to figure out how to accomplish this difficult goal. I sent her lots of good thoughts, lots of strength, and plenty of knowing that, “It will happen. Don’t give up.” Because here I am, in England, less than 48 hours away from my first in-person sighting of the Blackpool Tower.

No wonder I’ve been having so many psychic dreams about Blackpool and England over the years. My current self is sending messages back in time to my younger self. Well done, me!

And here’s you a dog, listening to music:

Lisa Bonnice is an award-winning, best-selling author. Her current passion-project is a series of metaphysical comedy novels. The first is entitled The Poppet Master (previously published as Be Careful What You Witch For!, now revamped and with a new ending). The Poppet Master is a modern-day fairy tale about Lola Garnett, a bored housewife and office drone who wakes up with unexpected psychic abilities, and no instruction manual, and Twink, the reluctant, sarcastic faery assigned to assist and educate her. The Poppet Master will be available in summer 2019. Its sequel is in the works.

Lisa is also writing The Maxwell Curse, a fictionalized version of a story she found in her own ancestral lineage about a witch trial, a generational curse, and massive mine explosion, all of which left ripples of destruction in their wake, devastating one family’s tree.

Wait … that’s chaos magic???

chaos is daisies

I’ve heard the phrase “chaos magic” for years, but never bothered to look into the definition for two reasons:

  1. When I’ve heard it mentioned, there were dark and evil connotations. I’m not interested in playing with that, so it’s not high on my long list of things to research.
  2. I’ve got enough chaos in my life. Why go looking for more?

I had no interest in a method of manifestation that focuses on darkness or confusion. I mean, good lord, do an image search on the phrase and some of the results are so creepy they’ll make you cry.

No, thank you. Life is hard enough without stirring that pot. I’d rather “be excellent to each other” and bring order. I wanted to find usable, harmless patterns in the chaos. (In fact, I even titled my soon-to-be-published second novel Patterns in the Chaos.)

I have always, in spite of societal training otherwise, assigned my own meanings to the objects and circumstances in my life. I’m a big watcher of synchronicity and signs from “the gods”.

I create my own reality, as well as I can, by paying attention to a glowing trail of psychic bread crumbs. (I don’t always follow that trail, but I do pay attention to it.)

I didn’t learn this from anyone else. In fact, sometimes I learned it in spite of anyone else. It came naturally, as I’m sure it does for many of you. I didn’t even think of it as magic. It was just … the only way life made any sense.

Turns out, that’s exactly what chaos magic is. Who knew? (Not me, obviously.)

To my great relief, I just learned that “dark and evil” have absolutely nothing to do with it. From this excellent article by Andrieh Vitimus on the Llewellyn Worldwide website, here is a straightforward definition.

Chaos magic is an attitude, a philosophy that promotes experimentation, play, and creativity while discarding dogmatic rules. Chaos magic points out that the techniques more than the symbols are what matter and that our belief in a system is actually what makes it work.

Well, sheeit. Been there! Done that! Literally wrote a book about it! I had no idea at the time, but I wrote extensively about my personal version of chaos magic in my first book, Shape Shifting–reclaiming your perfect body. I just thought it was an excellent way to live a productive and compassionate life. Again, who knew??? (Again, not me!)

And get this … there’s no religion inherently involved, so there’s no fear that “evil” is attached. I get out of it what I invite into it. And if I don’t bring it, it ain’t there. If I engage demons, I get demons. If I engage unicorns …

… okay, maybe not unicorns.

The point remains, if I screw up, it’s my ass–so I had better play nice. Therefore I declare, consistently, that I don’t mess with any vibes below the level of the Christ Consciousness, the Big Gun from my religious upbringing–the one who is “judging” me from my subconscious. That’s some early programming that I don’t know if I can rewrite, so I might as well work with it.

Buddy Christ makes sure that I don’t wander too far from that glowing path of breadcrumbs. And there’s enough room for both science and spirituality that I don’t have to choose between them.

So. I guess I’m a natural-born chaos magician. Who knew? (I do, now!)

Here’s you a magical dog, dressed as Professor Chaos:

A Vision Board come true …

From time to time I’ll make up a vision board (usually after the stack of magazines I’m saving for the project gets too tall to stand alone). A couple months ago, I finally got out my scissors and glue stick and made this:

The fun part of a vision board is watching for clues that the things you placed on the board are beginning to manifest. So far, there have been some interesting “coincidences,” like all of the houses I put on there. Jeff and I are moving to the Phoenix, AZ area next week, and are for the first time planning to buy our own house and not rent anymore. That was not in our plans when I made this board.

There is also a reference to Archangel Michael on the bottom, in the center. My son-in-law, Michael, who also moved to the Phoenix area recently with my daughter, is nicknamed Michael Archangel.

I could go on, but what caused me to actually sit down and write this blog is this little piece of humor that I added to the board, just for fun. I wanted 2012 to be when I get back to work on my novel series, so this tiny picture of a t-shirt is supposed to represent my desire to do that. Plus, I thought at the time, it was rather ironic that the first novel in that series is entitled “Be Careful What You Witch For!” and the shirt starts out with the phrase “Be Careful …” You can see this in the upper, right quadrant of the board, just above the shiny bubble.

Sooooo, imagine my surprise when I opened one of my Christmas presents, this one from Jeff’s brother’s family, and found this! Isn’t life fun?
