How I reached my goal weight

I don’t talk about weight loss much here on my blog, even though I wrote a book on the topic many years ago. I don’t want to obsess over my weight, so I keep my own journey out of the public eye (plus, no one cares about it but me). I only talk about it in my online Shape Shifting group. But today I reached my goal weight and I want to crow about it a little.

When I was writing Shape Shifting (the body/mind/spirit weight solution), I lost 50 pounds. I got it published, with a foreword by Neale Donald Walsch, and followed it up with the Shape Shifter’s Daily Diary (a law of attraction based weight loss–or other goal–journal). Then I moved on to other things.

During the years that followed, I wrote a couple more books and yo-yo’d up and down with the same ten pounds. I allowed myself that much leeway–as long as my clothes fit and I didn’t have to buy new ones just because of a few pounds, I was fine with that.

Then my parents both ended up with cancer, and my dad died. My mom is now in remission. It was a really tough few years, and I gained some weight back. Not all of it, thank goodness, but enough to have to buy new clothes.

Last spring, I decided I had to do something. I felt physically unwell and had to start buying an even larger size. So I started out with the UltraSimple Diet to clean up my eating habits. I’m now eating mostly organic (if I can’t find organic, I limit myself to natural and minimally processed foods, and keep sugar to a bare minimum).

I use the SparkPeople site to track my food intake and interact with others on the same path. I use my own Shape Shifter’s Daily Diary and post daily in the online group. I’ve become an avid walker, thanks to jog.fm–a site that helps you to make perfect playlists–and I track my exercise with a Fitbit.

This time last year, I felt sick all the time. I had panic attacks regularly and was too dizzy from Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) to exercise. In fact, exercise could make me so sick that I’d end up in bed for days.

Today, I’m 34 pounds lighter than I was in April (15 pounds less than my initial 50 pound loss, so I’ve lost 65 total, from my highest weight). I feel so much better. I don’t remember the last time I had to take a Xanax for anxiety. I’m only rarely dizzy. I go for five-mile walks several times a week–and I enjoy it. This is HUGE. I, seriously, have not been able to exercise for many years.

I’m done “dieting” now, and won’t be deliberately trying to lose any more weight. If I never lost another pound, I’d be okay with that. But I will continue to strive toward my healthiest self, and stay within a nutritious calorie range. I wouldn’t be surprised to lose another 20, if that’s what my body needs to weigh. But deliberate weight loss is no longer my focus. Now I’m going to just concentrate on enjoying an increasingly healthy life. And that feels awesome!

The Chicken Fat Challenge

As you may know, Jeff and I moved to Arizona from Florida in January, and while he found a job and I finished a book, we stayed with my Mom. Much to my dismay, I’ve gained a considerable amount of weight while living with Mom and her excellent cooking (and junk food filled cupboards).

We’re moving into a new house on June 1, so it’s back to our way of eating, and I should lose that excess weight fairly quickly (I hope I hope I hope), but I also need to work on getting back into some sort of physically active shape. I’ve been sitting on my butt writing for several months and I creak when I move now.

My friend, author Katie Thomas, has been doing amazing things with some hardcore exercise, challenging herself to “Jillian Michaels “Ripped in 30″ plus 20 Bikram classes and 12 times doing Ab Ripper X in the month of June.” Well, I am nowhere NEAR the condition one needs to be in to tackle something like that so I’m starting out on just a little gentler path.

Starting June 1, I’m going to force myself to do the Chicken Fat record every single day.

Remember Chicken Fat by Robert Preston? No? Then you are not of my generation. From Wikipedia: “In 1961, Preston was asked to make a recording as part of a program by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness to get schoolchildren to do more daily exercise. The song, “Chicken Fat,” which was written and composed by Meredith Willson and performed by Preston with full orchestral accompaniment, was distributed to schools across the nation and played for students in calisthenics every morning.”

I remember exercising in gym class to this record, and it being a good workout, but I was young and full of health. To do it today would be to kick my own ass. A sad statement, but true. So, I’m going to get back in shape with Robert Preston before I try to match the lovely Katie, with her new six-pack.

Epiphany Quest 2010: Chapter 8–Holy cow!

Today we’re leaving Lake Tahoe, a few days early, because the vibe here just isn’t what we’re looking for. The Lake itself is beautiful, but the casino city has a typical kind of desperate ickiness in the air. We’d rather spend the Solstice enjoying nature, so we’re heading out early to Salt Lake City, a very long drive across Nevada and Utah, including the Salt Flats, which I’m really looking forward to seeing.

While here in Tahoe, we’ve seen two brutal car accidents, where the vehicles were flipped over, and some poor soul in need of some sort of big help from the hotel staff. We don’t know what was going on, and didn’t pry, but something bad was happening. That’s when we took our drive yesterday to “get out of Dodge,” as it were, and saw the amazing cloud and sun formations that I posted pictures of on Facebook yesterday. It brought us back to center, thank Goddess, because we were both in pretty bad shape after Saturday.

Saturday was a nice day until the last part of the trip when we found ourselves on yet another terror ride, hugging the sides of mountains with no real guard rails to speak of. Then once we checked in to our hotel room, we decided to take advantage of the one night of this whole trip where we’ll be around a nightclub and lots of people on a weekend night. We got dressed up and went dancing. That’s when I realized that I’m either “too old for this shit,” a la Danny Glover, or I’ve “ascended” too far to enjoy today’s club scene. I was amazed to see that the club had almost-naked dancing girls, and some chick in mostly her skin, being painted for the amusement of the club goers. The music was AWFUL and the drinks were expensive, and the people were all laced with that same desperation that we felt in the casinos.

Now, I’m not judging. I am a card-carrying nudist so nudity doesn’t bother me (just don’t get me started on the topic of the objectification of women’s bodies). I used to work in bars, for many years, performed in many comedy clubs, and participated in my own forms of debauchery, so I don’t think these people are “bad” for doing this stuff. It just doesn’t fit who I am now. Plus, we just had better music back then. I don’t know what this shit was, but I don’t recall even hearing any words. Just lots of pounding.

The funny thing is that we came here, to Tahoe, after our amazing spiritual experience in Mount Shasta. I still haven’t written about that yet, because there is a much larger story playing out that hasn’t been completed yet. I’ll probably tell that tale once we reach the end of this trip. But in any case, we knew that when we left Shasta to come to a casino town that it had the potential for being a huge culture shock. I told Vicci it felt like coming down from Mt. Sinai, only to find the people having an orgy and dancing around a Golden Cow. Little did I know that “cow” would be a girl covered with paint.
