How I reached my goal weight

I don’t talk about weight loss much here on my blog, even though I wrote a book on the topic many years ago. I don’t want to obsess over my weight, so I keep my own journey out of the public eye (plus, no one cares about it but me). I only talk about it in my online Shape Shifting group. But today I reached my goal weight and I want to crow about it a little.

When I was writing Shape Shifting (the body/mind/spirit weight solution), I lost 50 pounds. I got it published, with a foreword by Neale Donald Walsch, and followed it up with the Shape Shifter’s Daily Diary (a law of attraction based weight loss–or other goal–journal). Then I moved on to other things.

During the years that followed, I wrote a couple more books and yo-yo’d up and down with the same ten pounds. I allowed myself that much leeway–as long as my clothes fit and I didn’t have to buy new ones just because of a few pounds, I was fine with that.

Then my parents both ended up with cancer, and my dad died. My mom is now in remission. It was a really tough few years, and I gained some weight back. Not all of it, thank goodness, but enough to have to buy new clothes.

Last spring, I decided I had to do something. I felt physically unwell and had to start buying an even larger size. So I started out with the UltraSimple Diet to clean up my eating habits. I’m now eating mostly organic (if I can’t find organic, I limit myself to natural and minimally processed foods, and keep sugar to a bare minimum).

I use the SparkPeople site to track my food intake and interact with others on the same path. I use my own Shape Shifter’s Daily Diary and post daily in the online group. I’ve become an avid walker, thanks to jog.fm–a site that helps you to make perfect playlists–and I track my exercise with a Fitbit.

This time last year, I felt sick all the time. I had panic attacks regularly and was too dizzy from Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) to exercise. In fact, exercise could make me so sick that I’d end up in bed for days.

Today, I’m 34 pounds lighter than I was in April (15 pounds less than my initial 50 pound loss, so I’ve lost 65 total, from my highest weight). I feel so much better. I don’t remember the last time I had to take a Xanax for anxiety. I’m only rarely dizzy. I go for five-mile walks several times a week–and I enjoy it. This is HUGE. I, seriously, have not been able to exercise for many years.

My journey from 215 to 150.

My journey from 215 to 150.

I’m done “dieting” now, and won’t be deliberately trying to lose any more weight. If I never lost another pound, I’d be okay with that. But I will continue to strive toward my healthiest self, and stay within a nutritious calorie range. I wouldn’t be surprised to lose another 20, if that’s what my body needs to weigh. But deliberate weight loss is no longer my focus. Now I’m going to just concentrate on enjoying an increasingly healthy life. And that feels awesome!

Could it be … progress?

After a somewhat rocky start, I feel like I’m finally on the road. You know how sometimes when you start a car that has been sitting in the cold for a while it sputters and coughs and makes you bang the steering wheel with frustration? Then you flood the engine and continue to curse that stupid old car for not doing what you want, when all it’s actually doing is responding exactly the way it’s supposed to, given its conditions?

Well, I feel like I finally got this old car started up again and am once again amazed by how well it runs once it’s back on the highway and in its element. I took some time off from my weight loss efforts, after finishing my book and losing my first 50 pounds, to focus on other things … things like health and family issues … but now that I can focus on my weight again, I’m very excited to be back on track.

I’ve lost five pounds since joining the SparkPeople site, and have made TREMENDOUS strides in the exercise department (I give all the credit to my Wii Fit Plus, which my daughter talked me into getting). It has exercises and games that I can actually do, given my “health issues,” and I look forward to doing it every day.

I’ve started a couple teams on SparkPeople, one based on Abraham-Hicks’ Law of Attraction work, and the other based on my own book, Shape Shifting–reclaiming YOUR perfect body (a body/mind/spirit look at weight and health balancing). Check out my SparkPage for links, if you’re interested. I’ve joined a lot of other like-minded teams and have met some wonderful people. In fact, I can see how my Facebook addiction might just become a SparkPeople addiction instead.

A great new Shape Shifting tool!

For a little over a month I’ve been experimenting with a social networking site called SparkPeople. It’s basically like Facebook, but the focus is on fitness and weight loss. It’s completely free and I’ve discovered that it’s a lot of fun, and very helpful because I do still have some excess weight I’d like to release.

I’ve been using it as a “private citizen,” as it were. I mean, I wasn’t using my name or talking about Shape Shifting very much, unless it came up in conversation, and then only casually. As I’ve been using the site, I’ve found that I REALLY enjoy using it. They have forums, teams, weight trackers, fitness trackers, calorie counters, articles, recipes, games, challenges, points, awards and all sorts of other amazing resources.

The reason it’s free is because the owner apparently invented eBay and sold the company to whomever owns it now for bazillions of dollars. This site is his way of giving back to the community that made him a very wealthy man. He has published a book through HayHouse called The Spark (which I have not yet read) and put a LOT of brilliant effort into creating a very useful and user friendly site.

Once I used the site enough to know that I’ll be sticking around, I began tossing around the idea of starting a Team (a specifically focused forum) for readers of Shape Shifting. The site doesn’t allow users to post advertising, as you can well imagine … that is the bane of every site owners existence … people who join your site just to post their ads and spam. So I was very careful to check with them to make sure that what I had in mind was okay with them. They have given their approval, and a Shape Shifting Team was born! I revamped my profile page there to say who I am and where the Team can be found, and now I’m announcing it to those of you who might find it very useful.

You can check out the site at http://www.sparkpeople.com and the team itself at http://teams.sparkpeople.com/shapeshift. So far, it’s brand new and has only one member … me. But I’d love it if you’d come and check it out. I’ve lost four pounds since I started using the site in early February, and had fun doing it.

I hope to see you there!
